   Eco-Cruise Cayuga Lake!

                                                                                     

The Floating Classroom, sponsored by communities and organizations around Cayuga Lake, as well as Tiohero Tours, provides lake access and discovery-based learning experiences for residents and visitors, alike.  Public Eco-Cruises are offered every Sunday from 4:00-6:00pm, June-October.  The cruises feature a variety or themes and guests.  Our eco-cruises are all-weather and embark from the Ithaca Boating Center dock on Old Taughannock Blvd. unless otherwise noted.  A $5-$10 donation is suggested for these “pay what you can” programs, to help support educational scholarships.  For details and advance registration, email info@tioherotours.com, or call (607) 697-0166.  Space is limited!

  SPECIAL PROGRAM, 2:00PM-5:00PM!

August 16- Eco-Cruise: Lake Trout Seminar

Join volunteer monitors of the Community Science Institute as they conduct citizen lake monitoring at several locations around the south end of Cayuga.  This is a great time to learn how individuals can help to protect our lake, and how you can get involved!  Learn more at www.communityscience.org   Also: Celebrate the work of area classes who raise and release lake trout to Cayuga Waterways!  Aquatic ecologist Jeremy Dietrich will provide an up-close look at the trout and salmon species inhabiting Cayuga Lake, and all-ages water sampling activities will be conducted.  Leaving from The Ithaca Farmers Market 2PM by reservation.

 

August 23:  “Aquatic Plants Survey”

Nationally recognized aquatic plants specialist Bob Johnson, of Cornell University, will join the Floating Classroom crew, to demonstrate techniques for conducting simple surveys of the many native and non-native species living in Cayuga.

 

August 30:  “A Little Lake Music:

The Floating Classroom welcomes local musician Pamela Goddard!  Join Pamela for songs of the lakes and the Erie Canal- a whole new perspective on how we live with our lake.

 

Sept 6:  "It All Ends Up In Cayuga Lake

Where Does the Water Go, After It Goes Down the Drain?  For many, the answer is "Cayuga Lake"!  Learn just what it takes to treat our wastewater as Jose Lozano, Environmental Lab Director for the City of Ithaca's wastewater treatment plant, joins the Floating Classroom crew for a brief presentation and demonstration of the lake monitoring techniques used to ensure that Cayuga Lake stays healthy. 

 

September 13:  August 2:  Art-Cruise

Join well-known artist and Guild or Nature Illustrators member Camille Doucet for lake-based art!  Camille will share techniques centering on nature illustrations with pencil and pastels.  This program is suitable for beginners as well as more accomplished artists.  Materials will be provided, as needed. 

 

Sept. 20:  SPECIAL PROGRAM, 2:00PM-5:00PM!

Join volunteer monitors of the Community Science Institute as they conduct citizen lake monitoring on Cayuga.  During this cruise, Roxy Johnston, Environmental Scientist for the City of Ithaca Water Supply, will also share information about the City’s role in lake and watershed protection.  This is a great time to learn how individuals can help to protect our lake, and how you can get involved!

 

September 27:  Mini-Sub on Cayuga.

This week's cruise will feature a return visit by Cornell’s AUV (Automated Underwater Vehicle) Team!   The team again launch its mini-sub from the M/V Haendel.  Live, streaming video of aquatic plants and other mysteries on the bottom of Cayuga Lake will be available, along with touchable samples.  Find out what's growing down there!

 

October 4:  Family Lake Exploration Day

Join the crew of the Floating Classroom for all-ages lake study activities.  Suitable for the whole family!

 

October 11:  Art-Cruise

Join well-known artist and Guild or Nature Illustrators member Camille Doucet for lake-based art!  Camille will guide us in  landscape (lakescape) drawing techniques, focusing on fall color.  This program is suitable for beginners as well as more accomplished artists.  Materials will be provided, as needed. 

 

October 18:  Fall Equinox presentation on Global Warming
